Zipline in New York City

I have done some rather “radical” activities lately … and I point out this fact because I am a very fearful person. A while ago, I wrote a post here on the blog about my experience doing a trapeze class here in New York – and you can check it out by clicking here. Last weekend we were at The Bronx Zoo to experience the newest attraction of the place: Zipline! I had never zipped in my life and the experience was very cool. Maybe it’s not so interesting for people who are only visiting the city since the practice is common in a lot of places – but, I think the tip is valid for people who live here and are looking for different activities!

The zipline is part of Treetop Adventure, a new facility of The Bronx Zoo. The attraction opened just over a month ago and includes not only the zip lines but also climbing activities. The zipline crosses the Bronx River and stands at a height of about 50 foot. We got there on Saturday, shortly after noon. It is possible to make a reservation online, with up to one day in advance. But we didn’t make a reservation, so, I called ahead to see if there was availability and, with the positive response, we went there and bought our ticket on time.

The staff that works at Treetop Adventure is very friendly and helpful. First, we store our belongings in one of the lockers available – free of charge. Then we watched a short video with safety instructions. Finally, it’s time to wear the equipment and the helmet and head to the jump area, where there is an instructor organizing the jumps. Whetever you’re ready, you are free to go. I was freacking out a little bit before jumping, but it was awesome! Too bad it is so fast! On the other side, an instructor helps you get out. Then you go up some stairs and jump again. See the video below to get an idea of the experience …

I just loved it! It was liberating. It’s bad that each ticket entitles only two jumps per person. For me, I would stay there for an hour, repeating it several times! The ticket for the zip line is $34.95 per person and the climbing ticket (two hours) is $65.95. The combo (zip line and climbing) is $74.95 – and you can make your reservation online. The idea is for Treetop Adventure to be open year-round – even in winter, with time permitting. The operation is from 10 am to 5 pm (weekdays) and from 10 am to 5:30 pm (weekends). The attraction is also allowed for children from 7 years.

Please note that tickets to any of Treetop Adventure’s activities do not include access to The Bronx Zoo. You must enter through the Bronx River Entrance (Bronx River Parkway at Boston Road). Any other entrance, it will require you to buy a ticket. The nearest subway station is Pelham Parkway (lines 2 and 5). See more information on the website. Do not forget to wear comfortable clothes and sneakers!
