Mountain Creek Water Park – water park near NYC

Summer is finally here in New York and I couldn’t be happier! After freezing months, there is no better feeling than walking around in light clothes and being able to explore life outside doing things that I love, such as cycling and having a picnic. Last weekend, due to the heatwave, our friends had the idea of going to a water park. So, we took the Saturday to go to Mountain Creek Water Park! I hadn’t had so much fun in a while! Perhaps some of you recognize the name of the place, as it is a winter skiing spot. Mountain Creek Water Park is in New Jersey, about an hour and 45 minutes from Manhattan, and is gigantic. Since I got some questions about the place through my DM on Instagram, I’ve decided to share everything on a blog post!

Estrutura

  • Mountain Creek Water Park is huge! As it is a water park, expect plenty of attractions to play in the water. There are more than ten slides and descents, as you can see on the map below. There are the most relaxed and the most radical options. Some of the highlights are on account of Surf Hill, a descent with several tracks, where you slide with an EVA mat; High Anxiety, a giant funnel, whose descent is made in a buoy for up to four people; Thunder Falls and Thunder Runs, descents that imitate waterfalls and are made in buoys for one or two people. The park also has a swimming pool with artificial waves – High Tide Wave Pool – and a children’s pool, in addition to some points for diving.
  • You need to have physical conditioning: in order to go down, you have to … go up! Each time you want to go on a waterslide or go down, you will have to go all the way up – and, many times, carrying the float that will be used for going down.
  • There are lines, but they don’t usually take long. And remember: we were there on a Saturday. The park has a maximum capacity limit, so I believe that it does not fill up to the point of becoming unbearable.
  • There are plenty of bathrooms scattered around the mountain, with changing rooms – but there are no showers to bathe in – just two outside the High Tide Wave Pool, with cold water. We took a quick shower right there before leaving and went to the bathrooms to change. At the end of the day, the bathrooms were in a very unpleasant state, with a lot of trash left even in the changing rooms.
  • Right after the main entrance and in the High Tide Wave Pool there are several lockers, of different sizes. You will need them to store your things. We had brought towels, clean clothes, and other things. We left these things and personal belongings in a locker – we choose a big one and paid $20. We also carried a bag with some basic items, like sunscreen – we reapplied all day and nobody got sunburned! There is a space at each attraction to leave slippers and other belongings.
  • Around the High Tide Wave Pool you will find chairs, which can be used by anyone, and also some tents, which start at $ 129. They are like a “VIP space”. You can make a reservation over the phone and I suggest making it in advance. Our idea was to rent one of these tents, but when we got there, they were all already rented.

Food

  • Except in the case of baby food, it is not allowed to enter the park with food. There are some food trucks, which offer options like tacos, in addition to the Moutain Eats, which offers burgers, pizza, and salad, and the Big Bear BBQ, for barbecues, and only the last one has a restaurant structure, with tables and chairs in a closed area – however, on the day we were there, the place closed at 2 pm for a private event. So, our experience with food was a little frustrating, as we stood in line in the sun at Mountain Eats to buy food. Tables near food trucks were also not in the shade. We took our food and sat on the Big Bear BBQ’s porch. The food is not the best in the world, but it is ok. Prices vary, with options starting at $7.

Tickets

  • Tickets start at $29.99 – buy online to guarantee the best price. We bought our tickets the day before and spent about $42 per person. Also, I suggest buying online because tickets are limited!
  • After purchasing online, you will receive a voucher – when you arrive at the park, you will present it at the ticket office and receive the wristbands.

Hours and operation

How to get there

  • We rented a car! It is an easy and short trip – around 1 hour and 45 minutes. In addition, parking is free. For those who want to use public transportation, the company Rally Bus offers buses on weekends, departing from various areas in New York and also in New Jersey. The round-trip ticket costs $40 on average. Click here to book – however, notice that the Rally Bus departs with at least 15 confirmed people.

My thoughts

My goal in this post was to give an overview of the structure of the park. Even taking into account some of the cons raised here, it was nothing that hindered our experience and I would certainly go back to Mountain Creek Water Park! A note that I think is valid: it is a water park, so the idea is to take advantage of the attractions and have fun. If your idea is to stay in the pool, it may not be worth the investment, since the only pool that allows this is the High Tide Wave Pool. The balance of our experience was super positive! We had a lot of fun and we left very happily – and tired!
