Christmas Windows in New York City – 2017

Here’s a cool thing to do during Holidays season in New York: check out the windows of the city’s department stores. It’s a show of beauty and richness in eye-popping details. Each year, the stores work harder and surprise us with the result, with different themes as inspiration. There are so many cool Christmas windows that I thought it was worth a post so you do not miss anything!

Saks Fifth Avenue – This year, Saks is teaming up with Disney for a “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” theme to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the film. Can you believe it? Each window shows an important moment of the film. Besides that, it’s worth to remember that there is a quite impressive lighting show on the facade of the building. You should definetley stop by, since is so close to Rockefeller Center.

Berdgdorf Goodman – one of the oldest and luxurious department stores in the city, Bergdorf Goodman is like an authority when we talk about Christmas windows. I suggest you to watch the documentary “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman” on Netflix to understand a little bit about the creative process. This year, the theme is “To New York With Love”, capturing the city’s appreciation for visual arts, music, film and more, by showcasing seven iconic and emerging New York institutions: American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the New York Botanical Garden, the Museum of the Moving Image, the New York Philharmonic, the New York Historical Society, and Urban Glass.

Macy’s – it is, probably, the most famous department store in New York. This year’s window theme is “The Perfect Gift Brings People Together. The windows are mood boards; depicting New York City and Macy’s as miniature pieces and the sense of energy that is surrounding the holidays. One window features a Christmas tree as the centerpiece at home; another captures the busy city with an ice skating rink; a third has Santa as a theater conductor during a holiday show. Over 100 workers are part of the Macy’s window execution team and it took eight months to build the Manhattan windows.

Bloomingdale’s –  the store created the windows collaborating with The Greatest Showman, a soon-to-be released musical by 20th Century Fox about circus impresario P. T. Barnum. For the grand opening, Bloomindale’s enlisted a plethora of talentsalong with two of the film’s cast members, Zendaya and Keala Settle, for a spectacle that delighted the public. The main idea of the windows is to take elements of the film, and have it make sense for someone that was going to a holiday party.

Lord & Taylor -This year’s theme was “The Best And The Brightest”. The Fifth Avenue windows have been transformed into a whimsical journey, as seen through the lens of enchanted snow globes, featuring over 60 variations throughout the display. Each of the five animated windows boasts a unique scene, including: Two polar bears, starry holiday scene set against NYC skyscrapers and a modern-day Santa looks into his globe.
