Burgers and milkshakes at Harlem Shake in New York

Last weekend, we explored Harlem another time, a neighborhood that still creates insecurity for many people and is surrounded by myths. I’m preparing a guide to the area that it will be published air up soon, but meanwhile, I need to talk about Harlem Shake, a classic place in the area that serves burgers and milkshakes – or, that junkie food that – almost – everybody Loves!

Harlem Shake opened in 2013 and has two locations in the neighborhood. The decor of the place is charming and with a vintage footprint – very reminiscent of traditional American diners, you know? The old school interior reflects Harlem’s culture and community. The “Wall of Fame” is crowded with over 200 autographed headshots of celebrities including P.Diddy, Asap Rocky, Maya Angelou, Remy Ma, and Janelle Monae. The “Wall of Fro” shows off the fabulous afro hairstyles of our customers. And the restroom walls showcase hundreds of vintage JET Magazine covers. Yearly the customers vote on a new Mr. or Miss Harlem Shake from the Harlem community.

After reading some reviews, we got there knowing what we would order. The menu features burgers, a variety of french fries plus sandwiches and classic brunch dishes (the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and brunch on weekends). We ordered the Hot Mess Burger, which features cheese, spicy mayonnaise and a relish with cherry pepper and bacon. This relish gives a very good taste to the burger, but it’s very spicy! If you do not like the spicy taste, better opt for the Harlem Classic. Remember that there is also a choice of vegetarian burger! Prices for burgers range from $7 to $8.50. The french fries are also varied – truffled, with pepper, sweet potato, etc. (portions starting at $3.25). And, of course, there are the famous milkshakes! The flavors are varied: vanilla, chocolate, caramel, peach … and the best seller: Red Velvet! The value is great: $ 5 for the small and $ 7 for the regular. In addition, Harlem Shake also features beers.

Oh, and you place your order at the cashier and wait until it’s ready. There is no table service. We really enjoyed our experience and would certainly go back there. The burger and the milkshake were delicious!
