What’s new in Coney Island for 2016

Daylight saving time starts, the days get longer, weather is warm, the flowers appear on the trees, the restaurants put tables outside and heavy coats gradually are changed to lighter outfits. Okay, forgive my failed attempt making cheap poetry. That’s because it’s impossible not be happy when spring / summer season starts in New York. When winter leaves the scene, forgotten places come back to our memory. And one of the coolest programs to do during this season is to take the subway and go to Coney Island. The iconic beach in Brooklyn – with a special atmosphere because the amusement parks – is a fun place to spend an afternoon or even a day. Coney Island has more than the beach, the park and the hot dogs from Nathan’s. In this post, you can check out some things to do in the area. And today, I tell you, what is new in the area for this year.

The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – The magnificent but decaying Childs Restaurant building is undergoing a massive renovation into a 5,000-seat entertainment venue scheduled to open in July, with acts like Matisyahu and 311 already lined up. Expect free shows as well, and a new 40,000-square-foot landscaped open space in case you don’t want to spread out your picnic on the sand. Some concerts are already confirmed, like Ziggy Marley, The Beach Boys, Deftones, Jill Scott e Don Henley. A Music Festival will also take place there – Freestyle Funhouse. Check all the events here.

Address: 3052 West 21st Street.

Endeavor – Luna Park will be debuting a new ride this April, Endeavor, which promises to provide the sensation of flying 60 feet through the air at 25 miles per hour. The event to celebrate the opening of Luna Park’s newest thrill ride happens on April 28th. More information here.

Address: 1000 Surf Avenue.

Coney Island Brewery – the new Coney Island Brewery location opened on the iconic Surf Avenue last September. So, this will be the first summer of the place, that offers beers like Pale Ale, IPA, Lager and others. It’s worth to remember that they offer free tours – Thursdays and Fridays, 5 and 7 pm, Saturdays and Sundays, 2, 4 and 6 pm. There are also some events – like live music and happy hours. You can check the events schedule here and take the opportunity to taste the different kinds of beer. And, speaking about beers,  they’re putting a “Coney Island twist” on a traditional kolsch with pureed strawberries and their own cotton candy flavoring. The new Cotton Candy Kolsch will be available starting mid-April, and will get an official welcome party at a sweet celebration with Williams Candy on May 28.

Address: 1904 Surf Ave.

Wahlburgers – the chain from  Hingham, Massachusetts, founded by three brothers, por três irmãos, claims it’s “chef driven” and it opened its first location in New York last September, at Coney Island. The  branch is one of a projected seven in New York City.  The structure is huge: it includes a main floor dining room, a basement dining room, and a rooftop deck with views of the ocean, that will be great in the summer. There are 12 burger-style sandwiches, besides french fries and salads. You should try a frappe (milkshake) – there’s even a S’mores flavor. It’s the first spring/summer season of Wahlburgers at Coney Island and certainly it will be busy! I am curious!

Address: 3015 Stillwell Ave.
