October means two things in New York: beautiful fall landscapes and Halloween! The official date is October 31, however, during the entire month, the city overflows with that atmosphere. The decorations and costumes take over the shops, the pumpkins take over the city, the residents decorate their homes. Certainly, it’s a magical time to be in the city. And like everywhere, there are events that are very traditional. One of them is The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, which happens in the small town of Croton-Harmon in Hudson Valley, NY – not far from Manhattan. I was super curious to check this event up close and this year I secured my tickets in advance. We were there last Friday and today I show you everything!
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is the tristate area’s coolest Halloween event with more than 7,000 glowing pumpkins. You see a lot of sculptures, all made of pumpkins. The lights and the sound effects help to provide an interesting experience. The event takes place at Van Cortlandt Manor. It is simple: you get there at the scheduled time and follow the path. The sculptures are arranged in a way that you walk and check everything until you take a complete turn and leave the place. In addition, before the official entrance, there are vendors selling food and also a store with souvenirs, Halloween themed products and pumpkin-based foods. We love it! It’s too beautiful, fascinating and I was impressed by the details! Plus, it’s a great place to go with kids – I saw a lot of families and they were thrilled!
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze happens in October and November, select dates, always at night. Tickets range from $16 to $25 (depending on the day and the age). You need to buy the tickets in advance and they start to sell at the beginning of September. Check out the official website. Also, you can check Stubhub as well.
How to get there? By Metro-North trains. Trains depart from Grand Central and also from 125th St, Harlem. The destination is Croton-harmon. Prices may vary depends on peak and off-peak. The trip lasts about 45 minutes. Once you arrive in Croton-Harmon, there are several taxis at the parking. From the train station to the event are about 5 minutes and the ride costs from $8 to $10.
