5 different things to do in the summer in New York City

Although summer only starts, officially, on June 21st, we are having some warm days already (even that spring is very bipolar). And for those who do not know, on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day, Americans celebrate the beginning, anticipated, of the summer. So, since planning is never too much, on today’s post, I suggest some great things to do this season. Some of them only happen during this period – others you can do whatever you want.

Free kayaking – yes, without spend a penny. Hudson River and East River have special spaces for this practice during the summer – it’s a perfect activity to add on your to do list during the warmer months. The experience is fantastic! It is a delight kayaking and still have as a bonus the beautiful view of Manhattan. There is a lot of places in the city for you practice kaiaking. Check the details, because there are specific dates and times.

Music festivals – so, you thought that the only festival here in USA was Coachella? No! New York City also has some music festivals. In 2017, we have at least 4 big ones: Panorama (which is promoted by the same company that takes care of Coachella), that happens from July 28th to July 30th, at Randall’s Island – check out more details; Governors Ball, that also takes place at Randall’s Island, from June 2nd to June 4th – check out more details; PinkNic, on June 24th and 25th, at Governors Island – check out more details; and The Meadows Music and Arts Festival, at Cit Field, from September 15th to 17th – check out more details.

City Island –  If you’ve explored Coney Island and are looking for a different “adventure” in the summer in New York, how about exploring City Island? This charming island is known as the “Hamptons of The Bronx” and is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long by 0.5 miles (0.80 km) wide and a population of more than 4300 people. Visiting this place is like being transported to a small City with super charming atmosphere and beautiful landscapes. The island is super famous for its seafood restaurants and antique shops.

Red Hook – I don’t get tired of suggesting Red Hook here on the blog and I think that summer is the perfect season to explore the place. This neighborhood is located in Brooklyn and you can explore a lot of places: Texan barbecue place, winery, seafood restaurant and chocolate factories. Besides that, Red Hook is next to the river, and it is amazing to walk in the area on a warm day. Also, you get a ferry to get there – which is perfect for a summer day!

South Street Seaport – It is a small area between the Brooklyn Bridge and Wall Street, gateway to the rich maritime history of Lower Manhattan. Entertainment, shopping, culture and gastronomy are part of the local experience. outh Street Seaport is a super charming area, with buildings with ancient architecture. It is a delight to walk there during a summer day, exploring the shops and gastronomy. My tip is to arrive there around 4 pm, and then enjoying a Happy Hour there. There are several tables and umbrellas for seating, bars, restaurants … you will have a lot of options to eat and drink.  This year, Clinton Hall, a craft beer bar at 90 Washington St, is opening a beer lover’s paradise at South Street Seaport in May. The two-level location will be located on the corner of Fulton and Front streets and will feature a rotating selection of the bar’s 20 craft beers and 20 burgers. In addition to craft beer, the 40,000 square foot pop-up will feature a Food Lab selling meals from a different celebrity chef every two weeks. The Lab is scheduled to open in June along with a cocktail bar.
