You must know that every city has a high and a low season, right? This directly influences the price and availability of hotels and flight tickets. However, there are some other factors that can influence availability and hotel rates, such as major events and holidays. To help you, I decided to list the most important events that happen in the city every year.
New York Fashion Week – the city always opens the Fashion season – afterward, we have the Fashion weeks in London, Milan, and Paris. And the event happens twice a year, in February and September. Dates vary from year to year, but it always starts at the beginning of the month and lasts for 9 days. You can check the dates here.
US Open – is the world tennis championship. It happens every year at Corona Park in Flushing, a neighborhood in Queens. The championship attracts a lot of people to the city, from all over the world and lasts for two weeks. It always happens between the end of August and the beginning of September. New York City Marathon – is one of the biggest races in the world, with more than 50,000 participants in each edition. The route is very interesting because the runners pass through the 5 boroughs of the city: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Manhattan. The event is huge and you need to pay extra attention because some streets are closed – the route also passes through Central Park. The Marathon usually happens on the first Sunday in November. General Assembly of the United Nations – every year in September, leaders from various countries meet at UN Headquarters in New York for the General Assembly. This event brings together all 193 member states, is the organization’s main political gathering, and takes place in the second half of September lasting 6 days.
Thanksgiving – I would say that it is the most important holiday in the United States. It is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of the month of November. In New York, the holiday is marked by Macy’s parade. The date also marks Black Friday, which happens the next day, and features great deals in stores.
Memorial Day – it is an American national holiday that takes place annually on the last Monday of May. The holiday honors the American military who died in combat and already celebrates, in advance, the beginning of summer (which begins only on June 21, officially). Labor Day – another American National Holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September. The day celebrates the social and economic contributions of workers to the country. The date marks – also in advance – the end of summer (which ends only September 22 officially).
Independence Day – It is Independence Day of the United States. It is a national holiday – July 4th – marking the Declaration of Independence of 1776, the year in which the Thirteen Colonies declared the formal separation of the British Empire.
In general, national holidays affect schools, public services, and offices – tourist attractions and stores usually open. The holidays that most affect the run of the establishments are Christmas, New Year, and Thanksgiving.
